Why a new emoji shows as a blank box
A device can only draw the emojis its font knows about. Send someone a character from a release their phone has never had, and they get an empty rectangle — the character arrived intact, their font just has no picture for it. It appears the moment they update.
This is also why the newest emojis are worth checking before using them somewhere that matters. Anything from 2024 is still rolling out across Apple, Google, Samsung and Microsoft, and the older the release, the safer it is everywhere. See how each platform draws them.
